Why should I participate in this workforce census?

By submitting your data, you will contribute to a comprehensive national report hosted on the NHS England webpages. This report plays a crucial role in supporting workforce planning and transformation efforts — ultimately helping to strengthen the current and future workforce and improve the quality of care for patients.

How organisations have used the census
Organisations have used the outputs of previous iterations of the census to:

  • “We share with system partners and with senior leads to consider change or variations as a means for improvements”

  • “We share the findings of the NHSBN census within the Psychological Professions and provide a summary to the board. The findings can help us to understand how representative our workforce is of the wider population (demographics) and identify where we have work to do. It ensures we have equitable provision across the Trust, and to notice where we may have areas of difficulty for recruitment/retention etc...these are just some of the ways this is useful”

  • “Use the data for benchmarks and setting targets - really useful to see trends as well”

  • “Share with system partners and with senior leads to consider change or variations as a means for improvements”

New for 2025!
This year, participants will receive access to the Data Explorer — a new, secure online tool available through the workforce programme webpages. The Data Explorer features a range of data visualisations, including charts, maps, and tables, allowing users to explore their own responses in the context of national, regional and ICS data.
